Shimba Hills National Reserve contains one of the largest coastal forests in East Africa, stunning landscapes, and a fascinating waterfall under which to refresh yourself. It is located in the Kwale district and is composed of tropical jungle, forests, and grasslands. It is the perfect way to break away from the monotony of safaris and take more time to enjoy the flora and landscapes that African nature has to offer.

In the morning, you will head to Shimba Hills National Reserve in the Kwale district, a district on the south coast of Kenya. From here, you can admire the Indian Ocean and Chale Island to the east, and the plains of Tsavo and Taita Hills to the west. Additionally, from its viewpoints, you can enjoy splendid views of the rolling hills and wooded countryside. Don’t forget your camera!

The reserve boasts diverse flora and fauna, including African elephants, giraffes, hyenas, warthogs, buffaloes, monkeys, leopards, galagos, cephalophines, shrews, and bushy-tailed mongooses. Shimba Hills also hosts the last herd of native Kenyan sable antelope calves and 111 different bird species. Both the coastal forest and the grasslands are home to many bird species, such as the red-necked spurfowl, Natal cisticola, and Zanzibar red bishop. However, it is more difficult to spot animals here than in other national parks, although it is still worthwhile.

Waterfalls and Views: During this excursion, you will also visit the famous Sheldrick Falls. Our driver will drop you at the viewpoint, from where you will descend through meadows and forests to reach the waterfalls. A ranger will accompany you during the 30-minute walk to protect you from the animals that inhabit the surroundings. This way, you can feel completely safe while enjoying the landscape and the freshwater pool at the foot of the waterfalls.

If you are staying in Diani Beach or Mombasa, you will have the opportunity to take a day trip to Shimba Hills or, if you prefer, spend the night there. From there, you will have wonderful views of the infinity pools built on the hills and the coast of the Kwale district.
